A pub is to host a fund-raising day to help provide a memorial gravestone for leukaemia victim Megan Cobby.

Eight-year-old Megan, from Meadowview, Brighton, died in September, after a six-year battle against cancer.

She is buried at Angel Corner, an area of Bear Road cemetery reserved for children.

Her grieving mother Julie Finnemore is finding it hard to come to terms with her daughter's death.

Megan was thought to be recovering, after undergoing pioneering transplant surgery last May.

Julie's cousin Sally Stuckey, who runs the Eclipse pub in Hove, is trying to raise money to help pay for the headstone Julie has chosen.

Mrs Stuckey said: "The headstone is ready to be put up in January. Julie has chosen it and the verse she wants but I think the final bill has come as a bit of a shock. It's going to cost about £1,700.

"Julie is still struggling to come to terms with Megan's death. It was a terrible shock, especially as we thought she was getting better after her operation.

"We want to take the pressure off Julie. She has enough to cope with without having to worry about where the money for the headstone is coming from."

The memorial day will take place at the Eclipse, in Montgomery Street, Hove, on Saturday from 11am.

Events include a raffle, tombola and auction. The pub has a signed football from Brighton and Hove Albion and Southern FM has offered a trip in its sky patrol.

Donations of small prizes for a raffle or unwanted gifts for a tombola are needed.

They can be brought to the pub or Sally can be contacted on 01273 272212.
