Hundreds of workers at Sussex Jobcentres and Benefits Agency offices went on strike today.
Services in Brighton and Hove were disrupted as staff joined a national protest against plans to remove safety screens protecting them from attack.
The strike is due to continue tomorrow.
Offices across the city are closed, although a skeleton service is operating at the Jobcentre in West Street to deal with inquiries and urgent business.
Union members are protesting at plans to remove safety screens in the new Jobcentre Plus offices.
Jobcentre Plus will be introduced from April, merging Jobcentre and Benefits Agency services across the country.
