Martin Lee led Great Britain to promotion back to the Champions Division of the European Men's Team Championships in Istanbul.

The 23-year-old from East Preston was unbeaten on his return to the side.

The left-hander was part of the team which won the premier division four years ago before GB were relegated last year.

He said: "It was good to be a part of a winning team. Like any team you want to be competing in the top group and now we can again.

"I don't know whether our team was any stronger than last year, it was just that on the day we managed to play well enough."

Lee admitted he was not in top form.

The Angmering club member said: "I was a little tired after a long year but I was delighted to still win all my matches.

"The conditions weren't the best. We played indoors on a hard court but the roof was leaking when it rained and the lights went out on one or two occasions."

Lee, who reached 107 in the world after recently reaching the semi-final of a $100,000 event in Bratislava, earned praise from captain Roger Taylor.

Taylor said: "Martin and Lee Childs did a terrific job for us. I am very pleased because it was important for us to get back into the champions division.

"I picked a strong team and it was also satisfying that Alex Bogdanovic was able to make his debut against Turkey when he and Lee Childs won a dead rubber."

Britain triumphed 3-0 in group matches against Ukraine and Turkey before beating Croatia by the same score in a play-off.

It left Taylor able to enjoy his second promotion of the year as captain following Britain's return to the World Group of the Davis Cup World Group in September.
