One of the biggest employers in Sussex is to axe 15 per cent of its workforce.

American Express, which employs hundreds of people at its European and Middle East headquarters in Edward Street, Brighton, announced today it would be cutting 6,500 more jobs, mostly from its travel business.

The cuts come on top of 7,700 job losses announced by the American financial services giant earlier this year.

The latest cuts, blamed on the fall-out from the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington, mean the American financial services giant will lose 15 per cent of its entire workforce.

The company, which is based in New York, said pre-tax profits for the fourth quarter would be at the low end of expectations because of the blow dealt to the travel industry by the terrorist attacks.

This afternoon it was not clear how the cuts would affect staff in Brighton.
