Hedgehogs are dying in alarming numbers because of public ignorance, according to Sussex wildlife experts.

East Sussex Wildlife Rescue says large numbers of the animals are dying needlessly because of thoughtlessness and inaction by members of the public.

Anyone who spots a hedgehog during daylight hours is urged to call a vet or wildlife rescue helpline.

County rescue co-ordinator Trevor Weeks said: "By the end of October, hedgehogs should weigh more than 600 grammes to survive hibernation but there are a lot out there that are not heavy enough.

"If a hedgehog comes out during the day, something is wrong with it. If anyone sees one of the animals at night, weigh it, and if it is less than 600 grammes contact us straight away.

"Do not put them in boxes or leave them outside in the freezing cold.

"We have also had people feeding them bread and milk. Under no circumstances should this be done as it can kill young hedgehogs."
