Two people were led to safety as a flat in Eastbourne was badly damaged by fire.

One man was taken to Eastbourne District General Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation following the fire at Cornwall Court, in Victoria Drive.

The fire broke out at 7.50pm yesterday in the lounge of the ground-floor flat.

Other flats in the three-storey building were damaged by smoke.

Ten firefighters spent more than two hours at the scene.

They were joined by scenes of crime officers and fire investigators.

A fire brigade spokesman said this morning the cause of the blaze was thought to be "doubtful" and police investigations were continuing.
