It is ironic correspondents resort to personal abuse when writing about the Compact agreed between Brighton and Hove City Council and the voluntary and community sector last March (The Argus, December 5).

One of its joint undertakings is to listen to each other and respond constructively. One of the Compact's undertakings for the community and voluntary sector is to acknowledge and respect the responsibilities and constraints of the statutory sector, including the council, and to recognise it has to balance the needs of everyone in our city.

It is regrettable there is not enough money to give every organisation what it wants in grant aid but hurling abuse at myself through the pages of The Argus will do nothing to change that.
