Paul Hubbard admits he has a huge task on his hands after taking over as manager at Saltdean United.

The former Whitehawk boss, who was caretaker manager at Saltdean earlier in the season, has taken charge on a permanent basis after Mick Ford's decision to step aside.

Ford, who had been in the hot seat for little over a month, will remain at Hill Park to assist Hubbard in finding new players for a club currently five points adrift at the bottom of division one.

The size of the task was emphasised against Horsham YMCA. Only one of the ten players Ford brought to the club played on Saturday and 41-year-old Hubbard was Saltdean's only substitute.

Hubbard said: "I am not expecting miracles. I am looking to get things sorted out for next season. If we manage to survive, and believe me it will take a miracle, then great but if we don't then I assure you we will bounce back.

"I am fed up with seeing miserable faces and bad attitudes and my first job will be to put that right."

Saltdean went ahead against YM when Brad Dougal set up Leigh Davis for a simple point but Nick Flint's reply earned the visitors a point.

Another new manager, Pagham's Paul Gilbert, saw his side lose 3-1 at home to Hailsham Town. Scott French, Jamie Furber and Paul Richardson scored for the visitors who led 3-0 at half-time. Debutant Stuart Campbell grabbed a second-half consolation.

Gilbert said: "The spirits are up. We knew it would be tough and it was but I was pleased with the second-half performance."

Sammy Donnelly's first game in charge of Southwick resulted in a 1-1 draw at Littlehampton but it could have been worse if the home side's Steve Davies had not struck a post with a late penalty.

The Marigolds went ahead when Jason Tighe scored an own goal under pressure from Chris Hazel but Wickers responded on 74 minutes through Dwayne Davis.

Littlehampton boss Andy Taylor said: "We are disappointed with the result because you need to win your home games against teams around you."

Glen Bridgman scored for Sidlesham in a 1-1 draw with Hassocks, who replied through Steve Wilkins.

Redhill made hard work of a 4-3 win over Chichester. Goals from Jake Hutchinson (2), Paul McCarthy and Glen Barlow helped Redhill lead 4-1 at one stage but late replies from Roger Moore and Paul Thomas set up a tense finish. Jamie Laidlaw was Chi's other scorer.

Whitehawk drew 0-0 with Wick.

Peter Heritage scored a hat-trick as Sidley United booked a place in the semi finals of the John O'Hara League Cup with a 6-0 drubbing of Three Bridges.

Veteran Heritage, joint manager and normally used as a substitute these days, was asked to start as regular frontman Dave Carey was suspended.

He responded with a hat-trick of headers inside five minutes early in the second half.

That wrapped up victory for a Sidley side who had led 3-0 at the break thanks to two goals from Paul Balch and one from Owen Ball.

Sidley will meet either Horsham YMCA or Eastbourne United.

Arundel booked a place in the semi finals of the Sussex RUR Cup with a 2-1 success over Eastbourne United which was more comfortable than the scoreline suggests.

Miles Scerri and defender Jon Tucker found the net for Arundel. Andy Lynch struck a late reply for United.

In a third round match, Tony Holden scored five times as Ringmer crushed second division Oakwood 8-0.

Chris Johnson, Kevin Townsend and Shaun Grice were also on target.
