Brighton Excelsior are catering for all categories of riders at their annual cyclo-cross meeting at Moulsecoomb Wild Park on Sunday.

The highlight will be an open senior race which will incorporate the fourth round of the Sussex League.

The hour-long senior event starts at 1pm.

It is an open race and the first Sussex rider to finish will take maximum points towards the Sussex League championship.

Brighton rider Jonathan Sharpe (Cycleweb), who has finished sixth, first and fourth in the first three open events held in Sussex, has yet to be beaten by any of the local riders.

His main challenger so far has been East Grinstead's Andy Seltzer and another keen battle between the two is expected.

Racing starts at 11am with an under-10s race in which Brighton Mitre's Jack Smith should figure.

At 11,15am there is a race for the under-12s. Both races will be held over a course adapted to suit the young riders. There is also a youth race for under-16s at 11.30. There are no entry fees for these three races and all starters will receive a free gift.

The Southwater Cycles team rode well in the Gorrick mountain bike meeting at Bagshot. Michael Thyer finished second in the Grand Veterans' race.

Gordon Smith and Stuart Aspinall finished fourth and ninth in the veterans' event.

Lyn Ford (Horsham Riders) finished second in the women's fun race, although few riders were amused by the cold and muddy conditions.

Sussex veterans who helped pioneer road racing in Sussex during the Fifties have decided to get together every three months for an informal lunch in Brighton.

The group numbers around a dozen so far and includes former professional Ron Pannell, 1950 Sussex criterium champion Vic Clarke and Lancing CRC star Eric Cloke.
