A youth centre has been awarded more than £100,000 for a sports project.

The Sport England grant of £119,334 has been given to the Brighton Youth Centre to encourage more people from minority groups to take part in sport.

The centre, based in Edward Street, Brighton, will use the grant to help more people with disabilities, people on low incomes and women and girls to benefit from sports activities.

A sports development worker will be employed to work on the project during the next five years.

Centre manager Anita Rich said: "We are delighted to have received this award. It will mean that we can extend and improve the range of sports available at Brighton Youth Centre to complement our current youth activity programme."

The centre provides a varied programme for children and young people aged from five to 25, including holiday and after-school activities.

It has increased its range of sporting activities for young people during the last couple of years and this highlighted the need for a dedicated worker to develop sporting opportunities for minority groups.

Sport England chairman Trevor Brooking: "Sport England is committed to increasing sports opportunities for disabled people, women and girls, ethnic communities and people on low incomes and that what is what this fund sets out to do."
