I have no choice but to respond to the wholly misleading comments of the anonymous correspondent ("Fur has no place in our modern city", Letters, November 26).

He or she claims that on five separate occasions anti-fur campaigners visited my shop, Mottoo, and were told some fur linings were made of rabbit fur.

I understand that to create the appropriate environment to gain public support, statements such as these need to be made. However, I question the logic of this claim.

Firstly, I run a small, independent clothes shop with few staff. The garments in question are a very small element of my stock. I know people in the fashion industry are not supposed to be very bright but we would have noticed new customers repeatedly asking the same questions and buying no stock.

The garments in question are clearly labelled to show they are made from synthetic products. On the day of the protest, I showed a policewoman the labelling and she confirmed what was shown. I also attempted to show the demonstrators the labelling but they told me they did not believe the labels.

These demonstrators seemingly believe people who want to buy and wear real fur products would happily buy them with a label stating the garment is synthetic. I think not.

I understand if the demonstrators truly believed I was stocking fur garments their emotions would be running high. However, my staff were verbally abused and it is unreasonable to expect the public to believe the only person who behaved aggressively was a member of my staff.

As a result of the demonstration, I have received - on a daily basis - letters attacking me and I am keen to put the record straight. I am therefore happy to meet any of the demonstration's organisers by prior appointment to inspect my stock.

I would like to reiterate: I do not stock fur products and nor will I. Any customer is able to see clearly displayed anti-fur stickers inside my shop.
