Donald Creighton, from Pevensey (Letters, November 2), is surely correct in saying he is not well-versed in Latin.
Nor is the use made of words in the former Soviet Union necessarily a sure and certain guide to their Latin meaning.
Any Latin dictionary would have told him "praesidium" means "defence" or "stronghold", "amor populi" means the "love of the people" and "praesidium reg" means "defence of the realm".
Surely the best defence for any country is the love of the people?
