A pensioner was left in shock after he was confronted by an intruder at his Burgess Hill home.
He heard the men creep in during the night and went to investigate.
The intruders fled empty-handed when they saw the pensioner.
Police are linking the incident at the man's home to two other burglaries in the same area at the weekend.
Thieves raided two homes in Station Road and another in Keymer Gardens in the early hours of Saturday.
In one of the burglaries the thieves stole belongings while the occupants of the house slept upstairs.
Anyone with information is asked to call PC Darren Bolt or PC Dean at Burgess Hill police on 0845 6070999.
