I enjoyed reading about Edwina May King, who died in Sussex aged 89 after marrying Raymond Burr and living a life of Hollywood glamour (September 28).
The article reminded me of the time at the Theatre Royal in 1983 when I met Raymond Burr, who was starring in a play called Underground.
A big man, yes, and interesting to talk to. He was an excellent actor who lived his parts, especially Ironside and Perry Mason.
He first appeared on Broadway in 1941 and became an RKO contract player in 1945.
He did more than 5,000 radio shows, many plays and TV programmes and made more than 60 feature films, including Rear Window, with James Stewart and Grace Kelly.
He twice won the US Television Academy's award for best actor.
Burr was something of an expert in education and conservation and he garnered international awards and recognition in more than 70 countries.
