On September 28, I went to a meeting at the Brigthelm Centre about the NHS.

There was a very poor attendance. I sat and listened to everything that was said, including moving cancer breast care to the Princess Royal Hospital at Haywards Heath.

That evening in The Argus the headline was: "Heart victim's nightmare" at the same hospital.

It is simply ridiculous to move a clinic to a hospital that cannot cope as it is.

Giving it more work does not solve problems. We used to call it passing the buck. We are told elderly and infirm people are clogging up our hospitals and whose fault is that? Not theirs.

Stanmer House would be a small solution, make a lovely place to have as a home for retired and infirm but not sick.

Lottery money could and should be used for venues such as this, then the money would truly be used charitably, not commercially as in £628 million for the Dome.

Everybody gets old, the population grows bigger every day and the NHS needs more hospitals, smaller and more efficiently run. The larger they are, the harder it is to keep track of everything.

What a headache the NHS is. And what a wonderful benefit it is for those who really need it. Long may it continue. I saw the start of it - may it never end.

Remember, it has to be paid for and that is one tax no one should begrudge.
