Motor racing fans have started dressing up and converging on the famous Goodwood circuit for its annual revival weekend.

Drivers and spectators are encouraged to dress in Fifties-style clothes for the three-day meeting, which is aimed at recreating the glory days of the track, near Chichester.

The event is organised by Lord March, who turns the circuit into a time warp for three days every September, which includes a ban on cars built after 1966, when the circuit was closed for racing.

Yesterday was practice day but it still attracted a crowd.

The roar of the engines was silenced, however, at 11am, as the band of the Blues and Royals sounded a fanfare for the start of the three-minute silence in memory of the victims of the terrorist attacks in America.

Goodwood spokeswoman Dawn Ralphs, who has helped organise fashions for the staff on duty at the track near Chichester, said: "Most people have dressed up and entered into the swing of things. All we need now is good weather."

Drivers taking part include Sir Stirling Moss, who is due to team up with comedian Rowan Atkinson in a historic Jaguar for one of the saloon car races.
