An elderly woman says she is frightened to leave her home after she was punched in the face on a bus.

June Decarteret, 68, says she was travelling on the 5A into Brighton city centre when a young woman punched her in the face.

Mrs Decarteret said: "I was so shocked and started shaking. I do not want to go on the bus again but I cannot afford to go everywhere by taxi."

Mrs Decarteret claims she was assaulted by a woman travelling with a man and baby who got on at Preston Drove.

She said: "I am disabled and have arthritis in my hips and joints. The bus was fairly full but there were some seats at the back.

"I could not get to them because there were no rails to hold on to, so I asked the girl if I could sit where she was sitting.

"She said her baby came before me. I stood up all the way."

Mrs Decarteret said when the man later asked her to move so they could get off, the woman became angry again.

She claimed the woman said there was no point being polite to her and punched her in the eye.

The couple got off the bus and left but police were called immediately. The event was recorded on security cameras and the film handed to police.

A woman has been arrested in connection with the incident and bailed pending further inquiries.
