A stubborn unbeaten 45 by Martyn Dobson ended Sussex Second XI's hopes of forcing a first championship win against Northamptonshire at Northampton.

The hosts made a bold attempt to chase their stiff target of 422 before eventually hanging on for a draw to close on 363-8.

Northants slipped from being well placed at 246-2 to 306-6, before Dobson dug in and he faced 115 balls in his valuable innings.

Dobson shared a seventh wicket stand of 35 with Tom Dann, who had faced 47 balls in making 13 when he fell to Umer Rashid.

Rashid struck again to bowl Monty Panasar for two but Northants survived as fast bowler Paul Havell got through 28 overs to take 4-103 and a match haul of 9-147.
