To correct a point in Chris Baker's article (July 11 2001) about glass on the beach after last week's Channel 4 Fatboy Slim gig: The BBC Radio 1 Dance Party has not been banned from returning. They're welcome back whenever they like. But they have been told they will have to pay for clearing up as there was lots of glass left on the beach after the event last year.

In fact, Channel 4 paid Sita to do an amazing job of clearing up through the night under floodlights. Perhaps a couple of patches were missed 200 yards from the stage. I'm sorry someone cut themselves near the pier.

In fact, the beach has broken glass on it most mornings and Sita staff do a painstaking job of removing it. But they will never find it all.

You can't hold an event of that size without any mess. But we're grateful to broadcasters such as Surf 107.2 FM, Southern FM and Channel 4 for their positive support for local events and their responsible attitude to tidying up afterwards. It's easy to criticise but much harder to organise a great night out for 35,000 people.
