When a motorist confronted a man who broke into his car he came face-to-face with an old school friend, a court heard.

The victim challenged Pieter Fox and told him he recognised him. Fox replied: "I am a thief" and ran away, taking 15 CDs, worth £200. Fox, 26, of no fixed address, admitted stealing the CDs when he appeared at Brighton Magistrates Court.

David Woodings, prosecuting, said the theft took place at about 3am one night in March as the victim returned to his home in Hove and saw Fox in his car parked on the driveway. He said: "The aggrieved recognised Fox as somebody he was at school with and who he had been friends with."

Fox, who has previous convictions, was remanded to Lewes Crown Court for sentence.

The court heard he is currently serving a 21-month jail sentence for burglary, imposed six days after he committed the theft offence.
