Bexhill won the Sussex Schools Second X1 League play-off Tony Geerts Trophy for the first time against Varndean at Shoreham.

But it took goals in the last five minutes to seal it. Alan Johnson netted direct from a corner and Justin Jirbanbey converted a penalty.

Manager Jeremy Wassell said: "It was a very close game that could have gone either way. Our goalkeeper Gareth Matthews made vital saves in each half and we thought it would go to extra time."

Varndean's Tom Thurston, who played with twin Shaun, felt the spot-kick award was harsh.

He said: "It was dubious. Our goalkeeper went to catch the the ball and their guy just lost his balance."

Jake Robinson hit the winner as Sussex under-14s beat Middlesex 1-0 the the South of England Inter-County Cup final with a 1-0 victory over Middlesex at Lancing But the under-19s lost 4-1 to Kent in Dartford in their final. Rob Neal (BHASVIC) scored the consolation goal.

Manager Alan Sanders said: "At least we've got to the final three out of the last four years."

Under-strength Sussex under-16s were pipped 2-1 by Hertfordshire in the semi-final of the South of England Schools Cup at Lancing.

Darren Budd (Hove Park), who will join Albion as a scholar next season, grabbed the consolation goal.

Manager Bryn Hawkswell said: "It was not one of our best performances. We had five or six injuries."

Holders Sussex were recently defeated in the last four of the National Inter County Cup at Oxford.

Cardinal Newman lost 4-1 to Dorothy Stringer in the Brighton and Hove Schools Under-14s Cup final, while King's Manor (Shoreham) pipped their under-16s 1-0 with a Gareth Davies goal.

Worthing Rebels beat Lancing Rangers 4-1 in the Arun and Chichester Youth League Division B Cup at Felpham with goals by Nick White, Lewis Allen, Dean Wilbrey, Jonathan Easingwood.
