Mid Sussex rivals Lindfield and Ansty face each other in a top versus second battle this weekend after both enjoyed their second win of the season on Saturday.

Lindfield got home by four wickets at East Preston and have an eight point lead over newly promoted Ansty who won off the last ball against last season's runners-up Crawley.

It didn't look good for Lindfield when they collapsed to 50-6 chasing East Preston's modest 113.

But Harold Torkington, who was captaining the side in the absence of David Whear, and Phil Weir both made 38 not out to steer their side to victory.

Earlier Weir, who is in his first season with the club after moving into the area from Kent, took 3-20 while new ball partner John Sutton returned 4-26. Keith Chamberlain held EP's innings together with an undefeated 43.

Simon Parsons was the Ansty hero as they squeezed past Crawley by seven runs.

The visitors needed 11 off the last over with two wickets in hand, but Parsons took a wicket with the first delivery and then removed Andy Wales off the last ball when the batsman edged a lifter off the shoulder of the bat straight to Richard Nichols at first slip.

Earlier Ansty had made 150-9 with Kevin Nichols top-scoring on 34 while Dave Gillett took 3-34.

Parsons finished with 4-15 in Crawley's 143 while Peter Elliott kept the visitors in the hunt for victory until he was run out for 39.

Nine teams in Division One have still to record a win, but Barns Green, Henfield and Pagham did break their duck for the season on Saturday.

Barns Green bowled out visitors Southwick for just 96 and got home by five wickets while Simon Helm's 52 eased Henfield to an eight wicket win at home to Arundel for whom Neil Chitty made an unbeaten 51 in their 153-6 declared.

Pagham were convincing 116 run winners over Petworth Park.

The home side rattled up 230-5 with Phil Harris making an undefeated 74. Park were then bowled out for 114, T.Weedon taking 5-25.

Ifield had the best of things in their drawn match at Burgess Hill thanks to a third wicket stand of 168 between Nigel Rees (90) and Graeme Dean (76) which helped them pile up 194-6.

Robert Hansford hit 55 in the reply, but the hosts closed on 136-6 from 46 overs.

Champions Findon made 200-6 at home to Clymping who finished on 163-7 in reply.

Nine points separate the top four in Division Two with Broadwater opening up a two point lead after having the better of things in their draw against Rustington.

Alex Clapp, brother of Sussex batsman Dominic, followed up his 56 in last week's game against Angmering Manor with an unbeaten 100 in their 205-7 with B.Farrell taking 5-68. Rustington closed on 150-8 in reply, Steve Helliwell making 56 and Peter Martin taking 5-21.

Selsey's Peter Benham made an unbeaten 128 and opening partner A.Horner 74 as their side cruised to a ten wicket win at Wisborough Green, overhauling Wisborough's 216-7 in just 35.4 overs. Earlier K.Vickery made 80 and Dean Vallance 76.

Billingshurst's Jamie Wood was the man of the match as his side beat Broadbridge Heath by four wickets in a low-scoring contest to move into third place.

The former Lancing College pupil took 5-28 with his medium pacers as Heath were dismissed for 112. Billingshurst struggled to 54-6 in reply, but Wood made 36 not out and Nick Turner an undefeated 25 to steer their side to victory.

A first wicket stand of 105 between Bruce Scott (78 not out) and skipper Matt Warren (30) eased Angmering Manor to a nine wicket win over St Andrews. Scott had earlier taken 3-25 and Cliff Thomas 4-30 as Saints were dismissed for 149 despite 73 from J.J. Davies.

Saturday's other winners were South Bersted and Bognor for whom Ollie Handson made 73 in the seven wicket home win over Ardingly.

Horsham Trinity's S.Cox made 110 in the drawn game against Storrington while in a high-scoring contest at Portslade the home side fell four runs short of overhauling Scaynes Hill's impressive 236-7, John Howick making 87 as the hosts replied with 233-7.
