More than 200 staff could be laid off at a Sussex call centre as part of cost-cutting plans.

The move could mean closing the Air Miles centre in Crawley and expanding another site at Warrington in Cheshire.

That site employs 200 staff and has the room to accommodate an additional 200 workers.

As part of the redundancy deal, workers will be given the chance to relocate to Warrington.

Those willing to move will be flown up before being taken on a tour of the centre and nearby Manchester.

But before then, a committee is to be set up to work through alternatives.

Last November, managing director Drew Thompson put together a new management team which began carrying out an operation review.

Staff have been given three months to come up with alternative cost-cutting plans.

A spokeswoman said: "Any responsible company carries out a review of the business on a regular basis to maximise cost savings and boost efficiency.

"We are working very closely with staff on alternative proposals.

"We have a fantastic bunch of people working here and we are keen to keep them. If these proposals were to go ahead, we would hope staff would consider relocating to Warrington where they would be guaranteed a job."

Air Miles, which can be used to fund flights and leisure activities, can be collected at stores, banks and petrol stations including Sainsbury's, NatWest and Shell.

Workers at the centre, which fields up to 10,000 calls a day, spoke of their anxiety.

One said: "I've already been made redundant three times and now I am facing the prospect of it happening again.

"Some people are looking at it with mixed feelings. There are those who have been here for years who are looking forward to large redundancy payments, while others, who are fairly new, will be forced to look for another job."

Richard McFarlin, of South London, said: "It was quite a shock for some people but the company is being very good about it.

"Rather than just say, 'Right we are closing', they are giving us the chance to have a say in working through options for our future.

"Air Miles has a very clear policy and Drew is very keen that everyone is included in the decision-making process."
