Down from Scotland, visiting my family and walking my granddaughter to and from infant school each day, I have been appalled by the lack of road safety provision in Brighton and Hove.

Because of the school catchment areas imposed by the local education authority, many infants and juniors have to cross two major busy roads - Old Shoreham Road and Dyke Road - with not even a lollipop person let alone a pelican crossing.

I understand Brighton and Hove City Council has admitted both are busy, dangerous roads but it seems more concerned with spending money on changing signs to proudly proclaim the new city status than providing safety for the city's children.

A highly responsible group of parents has had to organise the Stanford crocodile in order to collect Stanford infants together to cross both these roads.

The parents have no mandatory power to stop traffic. Nor can they include the many other children of all ages also crossing the roads at these times.

Many of the crocodile parents are encumbered with toddlers and babies in pushchairs, who cannot be left at home while their siblings are escorted to school.

Is it not high time a responsible city council looked to its priorities and the real needs of the communities it serves? A city that fails to care for its children has no future.
