A night porter suffered head wounds after being tied, gagged and beaten up by masked robbers.

Two men burst into the lobby of the Chatsworth Hotel in Grand Parade, Eastbourne, and attacked 64-year-old Victor McGuigan.

After hitting him in the face, the robbers tied him up and stole £370 from a safe before running away.

Mr McGuigan managed to free himself and call the police before being taken to Eastbourne District General Hospital.

He needed nine stitches for a head wound and was kept in overnight. The attack left him unable to see out of his right eye although doctors say he will regain his sight when the swelling goes down.

Peter Hawley, director of the three-star hotel, is now planning to spend £2,500 on installing CCTV cameras.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the unprovoked attack which happened on Saturday at 2.15am.

The robbers were around 5ft 10in tall and both had thin builds. Anyone with information should call DC Mark Castle on 01323 414157.
