WORTHING skipper Simon Holloway declared, "We got the one we wanted" after his side endured a weekend of mixed emotions.

On Saturday Worthing clinched the Kent/Sussex division one league title with a comfortable 4-0 win over Cliftonville.

But 24 hours later the Sussex side lost their HA Vase semi-final away to Weymouth on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

Holloway, who missed Sunday's showdown due to illness, said: "Out of the two, we are happy with the outcome.

"If we were told we could only have one of them, we would have taken the league.

"Our goal at the beginning of the season was to get back up. It would have been nice to do the double but it was not to be."

A large crowd turned up at Weymouth for the semi-final but Worthing never really got their game together.

They took the lead when John Massie went on a good run before slotting under the goalkeeper.

Weymouth replied either side of half time with copycat goals.

Towards the end of the game Worthing grabbed an equaliser from a short corner when Rex Fuller hit home off the keeper's pads.

Extra time could not separate the sides and the match went to penalties.

Mark Newson, James Godber and Colin Dand were successful as the first six penalties were converted. But Mark Duncan then saw his effort saved and, with Weymouth having gone 4-3 ahead, the normally reliable Massie blasted over the bar.

Holloway added: "Fair play to Weymouth. They are not the strongest side we have played but they were definitely up for it and on the day I think they deserved it."

The league title was clinched a day earlier after main rivals Burnt Ash were held to a goalless draw by Maidstone.

That meant Worthing's 4-0 victory over Cliftonville was enough to crown them champions by a single point from Ashford.

Duncan and Cerdic Atkinson each scored twice as Worthing saw off their visitors.

Penguins finished their league programme on a high note as they beat Eastbourne 5-4. Peter Blake scored a hat-trick with Marcus Brunton and Tim Warren adding one apiece. Replies for Eastbourne came from James Mackay, Dave Fielding, Adam McNaught-Davis and Neil Cunningham.

Newhaven lost 14-0 at the hands of Ashford.
