Parking attendants will replace traffic wardens in Brighton and Hove later this year when the city council takes over from the police.

They're being sold to a sceptical public as a good thing for the city since there will be many more people enforcing parking regulations.

Councillors say buses will be able to get through streets and residents will be able to use bays near their homes without suffering from illegal parking.

A crackdown will be welcome but as Hove police chief Graham Cox says, it may not be as easy as councillors think.

There simply aren't enough parking spaces for all the people who want to use them and if the council and its operator resort to Draconian measures to enforce regulations, these may prove unpopular.

When the towaway squad roamed the old town centres, it faced so much opposition it had to be withdrawn. This should not be forgotten.
