A Brighton builder has set up a gang of skilled workers to renovate charity premises for free.

Paul Gallagher, of North Laine Decorating, has gathered a group of decorators and builders all willing to give their time to help non-profit making organisations in Sussex.

He said: "I enjoy my job and I have had a great time working in the Brighton area. I realised there were charities using buildings in need of repair without the funds for necessary improvement work.

"At the same time, there are plenty of skilled professionals with a bit of spare time to help on worthwhile projects in the area. It's a great way to give something back to the community and when I started asking around among people I've worked with, there was an enthusiastic response.

"We were all keen to break the stereotype of the bolshie builder and do something good to make a difference."

Mr Gallagher has been joined by 11 volunteers, including professionals skilled in decorating, carpentry, building, plastering and plumbing.

He said: "The next step was to try and find a way to remove the cost of materials and so I asked around to see if local companies would donate goods to us for our projects.

"Renovation can be costly, even when the workers are not charging for their time."

Mr Gallagher found support from Brighton-based painters' merchants Brewers and the Builders' Centre in Hove and now has the materials needed to provide a complete service.

He said: "We have been preparing for some time and we are ready to hear from any charities with empty and run-down premises in need of our help.

"It's a great idea that we could be helping convert old property into a useful centre, maybe by adding facilities for the disabled.

"I am also keen to hear from other professionals and suppliers to add to our numbers, as the more people involved the more we will be able to do."
