The Korean car manufacturing company Daewoo was one of the biggest and best employers in Worthing until last year.

But, in three separate rounds of redundancies since then at the technical centre, the workforce has been cut from 750 to less than 150.

The latest body blow for hard-working staff comes this weekend as 90 of them have been told not to come back to work on Monday.

Events in the Far East well beyond the control of anyone in Worthing have led to this unwelcome and unexpected turn of events.

Now the hope of everyone is that this represents the lowest point in the technical centre's fortunes.

The expectation is that the Tom Walkinshaw Racing Group will take over the site as a research and design centre.

TWR is an international concern with a good track record. It appears to be expanding its British operation, unlike Daewoo.

With any luck, it may eventually be able to take on again some of the former Worthing employees who have been unable to find jobs since being made redundant.

It's sad the great hopes Worthing held for Daewoo have been dashed but there's now a real chance that a new concern can be built out of its ruins.
