Everyone will no doubt be studying Gordon Brown's Budget statement and asking what it means for them.

Having studied the details and made the calculations, very few of us have anything to cheer about.

The government came to office in 1997 having made 177 promises to the British people. I cannot think of one it has kept.

It promised not to put taxes up at all and then increased taxes by the equivalent of 10p on income tax. It promised to be tough on the causes of crime and we end up with fewer police and criminals being let out earlier than ever before.

We've paid the taxes. Where are the police, the teachers and the surgeons? Labour taxes us more and delivers less.
