The Radio One Dance Party may bypass Brighton this summer following a deluge of complaints about litter after last time.

Brighton and Hove City Council is still in negotiations with the organisers over plans for this summer's event.

However it has told Radio One it cannot return to the city unless it is willing to take responsibility for the clean-up operation after the show.

Last year the event was held on the beach for the first time in a bid to solve traffic problems created at its traditional home in Madeira Drive.

However thousands of people brought drinks bottles which ended up crushed into the pebbles.

It took days to remove the glass and the beach had to be closed at the height of the holiday season.

The problems were compounded by the failure of Sita rubbish collectors to clear the mess in time and by some revellers who had tipped rubbish bins over on to the beach.

At the time it was expected that the party, which is held in August, would be moved back to its former home in Madeira Drive.

The event is one of the highlights of the city's summer calender and more than 20,000 revellers turned out last year to see headline DJ Paul Oakenfold.

However, following the stream of objections, the future of the event now appears uncertain.

A council spokeswoman said: "We are still in the very early stages of negotiations with the Radio One organisers and it is not yet clear if the party will go ahead at all.

"However the organisers have been told that if the event did take place, they would have to take responsibility for cleaning up the litter afterwards."
