Captain Barney Stubbs led by example when Brighton lifted the Sussex Schools Sixes title at Eastbourne College.

He scored both goals as the College beat holders Sackville (East Grinstead) 2-0 in the final.

Stubbs grabbed ten out of 15 goals in total as the College's defence kept a clean sheet throughout the tournament. It ended a five-year wait for the skipper.

Cuckfield-born Stubbs, 18, said: "It ranks very highly for me personally. I haven't won anything since I came to the College five years ago. It has been a long time coming and I'm delighted.

"We reached the semi-finals last year with a team half made up of rugby players. This year we are all hockey players with three mature players, including myself.

"We had a good team spirit and worked hard. You could see how much it meant to us at the final whistle against Sackville."

It was a family affair with Barnaby's brother Giles playing alongside siblings Simon and Andrew Acott, plus England squad player Steve Edmonds and goalkeeper George Fan helping the College defeat Cardinal Newman (Hove), Lancing 5-0 and Bishop Luffa (Chichester) 1-0.

Giles and Edmonds each scored twice and substitute Carter once. Sackville defeated Lewes Tertiary College 3-2 in the semi-finals.

Bishop Luffa overcame Lewes Tertiary 1-0 in the play-off for third place.

William Parker (Hastings) and Newman were 11th and 12th in their debut in an event which featured around 100 players from 12 teams. Organiser Allan Grey said: "The final was a high standard. Sackville played well and, with both teams full of National League, England and Sussex players, the quality of hockey was excellent.

"I was pleased with William Parker and Cardinal Newman. They were inexperienced, but not without promise and skills. I would like to encourage schools like them to enter similar tournaments.

"The standard this year was the best we have had so every team has gained from the experience."

Worthing, St Bede's, Collyers, Lancing and Eastbourne I and II were among other schools to compete.

Meanwhile, the Barnes brothers helped Eastbourne College qualify for the national youth cup under-18s finals.

A goal by Dominic secured a 1-0 win for the Sussex champions over Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) in the South East Region event, which was switched to Stanley Deason Leisure Centre, Brighton, from Seaford College due to foot-and-mouth precautions.

After Andy Rowe netted to secure the same winning scoreline against Teddington (Middlesex), brother Alex fired home in the 2-0 victory against Kent College, with Nick Brown also on target.

Eastbourne College lost all three matches in the under-14s' regional event at Ashford (Middlesex).

Hurstpierpoint College came third out of four in their regional debut at under-16s in High Wycombe. T hey defeated Merchant Taylor's (Middlesex) 2-0 before going down to runners-up Royal Grammar School High Wycombe (Buckinghamshire) 3-1.

Brighton College compete in the National Schools tournament at Weybridge today with Carter likely to replace Giles who injured an ankle in the county event.
