Q: I recently upgraded my computer to Windows 98 and now, when I try to shut the computer down, it just locks up.

A: It is likely a device driver not working properly is causing your problems. Device drivers act as an interface between your computer and its peripherals, like scanners, external drives, sound cards, etc. Downloading updated drivers for all your peripherals from the internet may well resolve your problem.

Q: I have a G400 Macintosh and two PCs. I would like to network them together. Any advice?

A: Without the right software, this is very hard indeed. Luckily, there are a number of software products around that can help you resolve this problem. One of them is DoubleTalk from Connectix (http://www.connectix. com) which costs $99 (£67.66) and claims to offer a simple solution to creating peer-to-peer networks between PCs and Macs. You can also read an excellent overview of networking Macs and PCs at: www.homepcnetwork.co/pcmacovr.htm.

Q: I want to include fractions in a word processing document but I cannot find the right key on the keyboard. How do I do this?

A: In Microsoft Word, simply enter the first number, a forward slash, then the second number and then press space. This should automatically typeset the fraction correctly. If this does not work, or you are not using Word, there is also the option of using the system Character Map utility. Click on the Start button, then select Programmes, then Accessories, followed by Character Map. You should see a grid of characters and a font drop-down. Select the font you are using and look through the grid for the correct fraction that you want. Double-click the appropriate grid cell and click the Copy button. You should then be able to paste the fraction into your document.

Q: I have got a copy of Quake II but it will not work on my computer.

A: Quake II is quite a demanding game to run on a computer. You need quite a powerful machine (PII or above preferably with a 3D card). Try is downloading the latest upgrade patch from ID at www.idsoftware. com This game also will not work sometimes if your regional set-tings are not set to English (United Kingdom). You find this setting in the Control Panel (double click the Regional Settings icon). Finally, make sure your display properties are set to 16-bit colours.
