Haywards Heath are ready to plough through all weathers to grab the coveted London Two South title.

Dave Wattam's side battled to a 30-3 verdict over stubborn Tonbridge Juddian on a mudheap on Saturday.

The skipper, who grabbed the opening try in first half stoppage time, admits it could be a real slog as they chase seven more wins to clinch the title.

Wattam said: "These pitches are a nightmare. The sooner it gets drier and we can run the bigger teams round the park, the better. All it is at the moment is tight stuff, taking it short and keeping the presusure on."

Saturday's game was switched from waterlogged Whitemans Green to an outside pitch at Crawley.

Even there, the mud there was a couple of inches deep in places and the heavy going, some dogged work by the lowly visitors and two disallowed tries meant Heath were level at 3-3 with the interval looming.

Then Wattam forced his way over in support of a Matt Benstead break to give Heath a half-time advantage.

Owen Ashton kicked his second penalty straight after the re-start and No.8 Dave Cook extended the lead from a five metre scrum forced by Jon Graham's astute kick.

Hooker Nick Killick was next to strike, exploiting a gap in the remnants of the Juddian defence after Heath had spun the ball from right to left, then back out to the right.

Giles Goodburn rounded things off when a combination of some good footwork and a lucky ricochet gave him a kick-and-chase try beneath the posts.

Ashton converted the last two tries.

Wattam praised Crawley's generosity in staging the game and added: "You can't go out in this league and expect to win by 60 points.

"But if we all our games by a point, we will win the league."

Title rivals Canterbury thrashed Alton 73-3 to enhance their impressive points difference. The top two meet next month.

Heath are not the only Sussex team in with a chance of promotion. Bognor can squeeze into the top two in Four South East after results went their way on Saturday.

Second placed Dunstonians lost to Dartfordians and go to Hampshire Avenue next Saturday.

Bognor came from 18-10 down at the break to beat Beccehamians 35-18.

Gareth Williams, Jonny Lang, Steve Dove, Andy Shipp and Richard Hine scored tries for Bognor with Shipp adding two penalties and two conversions.

Eastbourne won 21-8 in a bad-tempered clash at old rivals Hove.

Alan Andrews and Danny Craven scored first half tries for Eastbourne, converted by Jon Lord.

Darryl Elliott's try put Hove back in it at 14-8 but home skipper Phil Ward, who had earlier kicked a penalty, saw his clearance charged down for Joel Craven to round things off. Lord again converted.

Chichester are putting up a tremendous battle against relegation. The 34-31 win at Park House was their third in four outings.

They were 31-17 down with seven minutes to go but wing Stuart Brandon scored two great tries in the space of a minute and Lee Sullivan grabbed his second.

Michael Fradgely was Chi's other scorer with Richard Johnson kicking three conversions and a penalty.

The highlight of Heathfield's 16-5 defeat at Folkestone came in the final minutes when prop James Dimmack's dummy put Ian Jenkins over for a try.
