Beaches in West Sussex have won a national accolade for water quality and cleanliness.

The Tidy Britain Group has given Seaside Awards to Littlehampton Coastguards, West Wittering, Worthing Town and Bognor, east of the pier.

Other criteria judged for the award, which allows the resorts to fly the coveted Seaside Flag, included access, safety, dog control facilities, maintenance and information.

Alan Woods, the Tidy Britain Group's chief executive, said: "In 1992 when we launched the Seaside Awards, just 92 UK beaches were good enough to attain one.

"Now we have 308 Seaside Award winners, 87 per cent of British resort beaches ban dogs, 70 per cent have first aid facilities and 61 per cent provide lifeguards.

"While no one is pretending that we have solved all the problems on our beaches, it serves no purpose to continually criticise them. In fact, with these results today it is time we did as many other countries do and actually celebrate what the British seaside has to offer."

The flags will be presented at a ceremony in Torquay on March 26.
