British shoppers have been using the internet for their weekly food shop more than consumers in any other country, including the US where the concept was pioneered.

Last year, groceries worth £398million were sold online in the UK and Tesco had more than half of the market.

The rapid growth of the supermarket chain's www.tesco.com offshoot has made it the biggest online grocer in the world.

The number of people with internet grocery shopping accounts has remained small to date.

In the UK, online food shopping accounted for just 0.4 per cent of the market for food, while in the US the rate was 0.33 per cent.

The findings were revealed in a report by Datamonitor which has forecast the online grocery market, currently worth £2.36billion, is set to become the biggest business-to-consumer sector.
