Selsey player manager Danny Hinshelwood was fuming with referee John Ewen after his team crashed to a late Burgess Hill winner at Leylands Park.

Hinshelwood insisted that all three Burgess Hill goals were questionable and spoke to the Eastbourne official.

He said: "There are certain things I don't want to comment about because I would probably get into trouble, but I'm not happy with the decisions for any of their goals."

Selsey lacked discipline from the start and that was why they went in at the break 2-0 down to goals from Richard Carter and Dave Stevens.

The visitors fought back with strikes from Darren Lowery and Steve Hill, only for the work to be undone seven minutes from time by a Stevens strike with a team-mate seemingly offside.

Hillians boss Gary Croydon defended Ewen.

He said: "It does seem that when we play a team from West Sussex you have to watch your limbs a bit. I'm a bit disappointed we got involved and thrown off track, whereas last week against Chichester we kept our cool.

"It's very difficult for the officials if players are going to be deceitful in the way they approach the game.

"I'm fully aware the word 'sportsmanship' doesn't exist anymore. Most teams are cynical, which makes if tough for referees. They have not got eyes in the back of their heads."

The result means Hillians have the same number of points as Pagham and Horsham YMCA, but are third on goal difference. But Croydon's team look capable of stringing a run together that could steal the march on their rivals.

Hinshelwood said: "I think Burgess Hill are going to sneak it. They are not going to lose many games and their never-say-die attitude should take them through."

Croydon has ordered his men to report to Leylands Park an hour-and-a-half before tomorrow night's game with Saltdean.

He said: "We shouldn't be throwing away 2-0 leads like that. There are a few things we have got to discuss. This team can win the title, but they've got the cut out silly lapses of concentration."

Carter pounced to put Burgess Hill ahead on 23 minutes and Stevens' low drive doubled their advantage.

Selsey hit back against the run of play in the 68th minute when Lowery shot low past goalkeeper Richard Waters and Hill levelled two minutes later with the Hillians' defence all at sea. Stevens converted a low cross for the winner.
