Ringmer Community College has been granted specialist technology college status, allowing it to go ahead with an ambitious development plan.

The announcement by Education Secretary David Blunkett also means a £700,000 boost over the next four years.

Principal Steve Johnson said: "This is tremendous news for everyone linked to the college.

"Our ambitious plans to become a centre of excellence in maths, science, technology and ICT will benefit all our pupils as well as the many adults who come to learn at the college.

"We now have the money to help turn our dreams into reality."

Plans for the college include setting up an "eco-lab" and it is hoped the continuing work of the college Eco-group will show how quality of life can be improved through technology without harming the environment.

The college's bid for specialist status was supported by the World Wide Fund for Nature, which will provide advice and support for the Eco-group.

The college says it will retain its existing strengths in the arts, humanities, English and French, but there will also be changes to the curriculum, giving it a distinctly technological flavour.
