After a start of 6,7, Sam Ives, Bill Smithers, George Cook and Brian Dunne were off to a flier when Worthing played Chawton Park (Alton) in the London and Southern Counties Shield.

Playing at home, Dunne's rink finished 30-13 winners over Tony Sallis while Dave Robinson, Adrian Raphael, Tom Campbell and Chris Young got 11 shots over their last three ends in winning 37-9 against Dave Turner.

Travelling away, Malcolm Lock, John Williams, John Schools and Mick Howard won 20-18 over Matt Jensom while Gordon Archibald, Colin Atyeo, Jack Creighton and Bob Austin lost 24-20 to Tony Simms.

That gave Worthing an overall win of 107-64 and they play Victory or Banister Park in the next round on February 3.

Adur's two home rinks had a wretched time and they were soundly beaten by Camberley.

King Alfred pulled off an unexpected win over Denton Island and now play Preston who beat Prince Arthur 101-51 with all four rinks successful.

Their victory included a 32-9 win by Lee Cooper, Tony Fenton, Dave Hesketh and Chris Turrell.

Sussex have dropped Pam Hawkins, of Grattons, and Langney Sports' Beryl Fry for the Atherley Trophy inter-county championship quarter-final against Devon at the Moonfleet club in Weymouth next Friday.

They were in the rink skipped by Arun's Wendy Adams which lost 24-14 in the recent 133-97 win over Surrey.

Recalled to take their places are Daphne's Arun colleagues Daphne Anderson and Mavis Butler. This makes an all-Arun rink as Bridget Collins stays at number two.

There is one other change which involves Adur's Brenda Piper, who was a late replacement in the Surrey game for the unwell Lorraine Kemp. Brenda reverts to substitute and Lorraine returns to the team.

The rinks skipped by Rita George of King Alfred, Jean Bowles of Preston, Di Taylor of Grattons and Wendy Davies, of Worthing, remained unchanged.

Sussex will be travelling by coach to Weymouth and any supporters wishing to go should ring match secretary Pat Anders on 01273 553369.

Adur's Brenda Piper and Sheila Moore are the travelling reserves.

The Sussex CWIBA were beaten by King Alfred in a six rink match at Hove.

Sussex men had a 148-74 win at Worthing Pavilion in a six rink match against the Sussex under-25s and Sussex Patrons lost 128-125 to Adur with Horsham members B. Taylor, P. Frechnall, G. Thornback and G. Cooper the top rink.
