Preston got the better of Wealden 74-67 and Adur walloped Worthing 96-63 in the Sussex area semi-finals of the national inter-club Yetton Trophy event.

It was really close throughout the 21 ends between Preston and Wealden. At Wealden, Preston's Sheila Miller, Bridget Parr, Pat Pearce and Jean Bowles won 26-10 against Pam Parsons, Rosemary Richards, Marjorie Smith and Irene Scoble.

But counter-balancing that were Jan Dearling, June Clayton, Terri Wall and Sue Jones who lost 20-14 to Janet Noyes, Myrtle Reeves, Hazel Jepson and Janet Birch. Three shots on the 21st end by Jones were vital in the final outcome.

At Preston, Brenda Bailey, Doreen Tilling - substitute for the unfit Di Whittingham - Ann Owen and Debbie Stavrou were struggling at 15-5 down after 12 ends against Wealden's Jane Mackenzie, Jill Saunders, Shirley Nelson and Joan Howson.

But four twos in a row and a four on the 18th end helped them win 22-18.

Doreen Brockes, Peggy Moore, Kathy Flood and Betty Durrant were 6-6 after 10 ends against Maureen Chown, Daphne Kennard, Elizabeth Gooding and Doreen Hough. Three shots on the 17th left Durrant's team a shot behind, but the last four ends cost them six and they lost 19-12.

With their two home rinks smashing the opposition out of sight over the second half of the match, Adur finished 96-63 winners after Worthing had led overall 34-27 at 10 ends but trailed 61-47 after 15 and 77-55 after 18.

Adur's Ann Waller, Shirley Moses, Linda Gray and Sheila Moore were only 9-7 ahead after ten ends at home to Julie Law, Kate Page, Ann Parsons and Ann Briault. But 12 without reply over the next five earned them a staggering 32-9 victory. Linda Gray was particularly effective for the Adur rink.

Adur's other home four of Linda Lester, Jenny Bainbridge, Jean Perchard, who came in for Sue Warner, and Sandra Godfrey only led Edie Bond, Iris Robinson, Rosemary Smithers and Pat Fulcher 12-7 after 10 ends. But they stretched it to a hefty 27-9 after 15 and eventually won a high-scoring affair 35-17.

Worthing's home rinks both won, but Jean Meneeley, Gil Robinson, Freda Linberry and Wendy Davies only triumphed 19-17 against Brenda Piper, Ann Crouch, Pam Mole and Iris Grice in a very good contest.

With six ends left, Doris Hodgson, Carol Rose, Val Atkins and Lena Inch led Pat Haworth, Gwen Webster, Audrey Donno and Jan Livingston 17-4 and they eventually eased home 18-12.

The final is on Thursday.

The Arun club at Bognor, which has been closed since late October due to storm damage, is scheduled to re-open next weekend.

The roof was dislodged during the Autumn storms and rain seeped through, forcing the carpet and underfelt to be replaced.

In the Sussex women's pairs at Adur, the Worthing pair, Freda Linberry and Wendy Davies, picked up 2,5,3 starting on the 18th end to get three ahead before winning 18-17 against Linda Gray and Sheila Moore.
