Shadow Chancellor Michael Portillo today visited a Sussex caravan park hit by autumn's extreme weather.

In October a tornado flung mobile homes into the air at the Riverside Caravan Park, Bognor.

One landed on a caravan with two women inside. The park also lost eight caravans when a nearby river flooded part of the site.

Mr Portillo said flood prevention was now the way forward for many areas and not just relief.

He said: "We have to assess priorities as flooding looks likely to be more frequent.

"We need to look at reallocating national resources so that more work is done more quickly."

Mr Portillo, invited by Bognor and Littlehampton Tory MP Nick Gibb, was due to travel on to Lewes later today to visit traders in the Cliffe Business Centre, where businesses have been badly hit by October's floods.
