Companies with international ambitions have a new champion.

Lewis Scott has been appointed Sussex's first international trade director.

Taking up his role this week, Mr Scott said it was a fear of the unknown and confusion over where to go for information, advice and help that has prevented many firms from exploring export opportunities.

He has been appointed by Trade Partners UK, a new Government organisation providing overseas support services for companies.

Mr Scott said he was determined to open up export markets and provide information to more businesses.

He said: "My role is to co-ordinate the efforts being made by specialist advisers in the Business Links located across the region in an attempt to provide comprehensive and consistent advice and information to companies.

"We also want businesses to be very clear on where they should go for information and advice on any aspect of export markets."

He said an initial visit from an export counsellor to help evaluate a company's export potential would be free of charge.

Mr Scott was previously head of the International Trade Team in London and has 20 years of commercial experience.

He has also personally exported to 37 countries across the globe.

Trade Partners UK brings together teams in more than 200 British embassies, more than 45 Business Links in the UK and at least nine Government departments, as well as representatives from chambers of commerce across the country.

Its aim is to make the available services clearer, more effective and easier for British exporters and investors.

Firms can access clear and comprehensive information on export markets, advice and opportunities through their local Business Link or through the new Trade Partners UK web site at www.tradepartners.gov.uk
