Regulars are preparing to say farewell to a popular seafront pub which could be bulldozed to make way for a new block of flats.

Plans have been drawn up to build 23 flats and knock down the Litten Tree in Marine Parade, Worthing.

The plans have sparked outrage from regulars at the pub, which is well known for its promotion of local bands.

The pub, formerly the Wine Lodge, is a regular haunt for students as well as music-lovers of all ages.

Punter Richard Black, 28, of Lyndhurst Road, Worthing, said: "It's a really popular pub and is always packed. There's always a good atmosphere in the pub.

"I have had many enjoyable nights in the Litten Tree. It would be terrible for it to be turned into flats.

"It's great for live music. Many local bands play at the pub and it gives them a stage as well as a good night's entertainment for people in the pub.

"Something must be done to stop it being knocked down. I think a petition should be raised and some sort of protest organised to keep it as a pub."

The new proposals will be considered by members of Worthing Borough Council planning committee on December 19.

Developers withdrew an application to build a seven-storey block of 49 flats in June this year but after going back to the drawing board have now submitted the new set of plans.

The pub was originally built in the Victorian era and was converted into a pub by Roberts and Son in 1950.

Anyone wanting to object or write in support of the application should contact the planning department of Worthing Borough Council based at Portland House in Richmond Road.
