Is this positive enough for you, Peter Atkinson (Opinion, December 8)? Conservatives will restore police numbers to the levels of 1997.

Police will be able to spend more time fighting crime. Tories will pursue an honest sentencing policy, ensuring criminals will serve the sentence handed down by courts. Stiffer sentences will be introduced for persistent offenders. If Mr Atkinson had bothered to read the leaflet properly, he would be aware of these proposals.

Compare the Conservatives' commonsense alternatives to Labour's record: 3,000 fewer police, 190,000 more offences being committed and 23,000 criminals let out of prison early.
