Angry residents have told councillors they live in fear for their lives because of the speed and weight of lorries using their road.

A campaign for major improvements to Ford Road, Arundel, was launched everyone who returned forms in a neighbourhood survey said they felt at risk.

The survey will be discussed for the first time tonight at a meeting in Arundel of West Sussex County Council's Downland area committee.

Adam Swain, who helped carry out the survey, said neighbours were also worried that vibrations were damaging houses, many of which are 100 years old, with some residents blaming lorries for cracks in walls and ceilings.

Councillors have been told six cars have been written off after being involved in accidents and an estimated 30 wing mirrors have been knocked off cars parked in the road.

One woman says she was blown off her cycle by the backdraft from a huge lorry as it went past her.

Mr Swain said: "It is a ridiculous situation with hundreds of the heaviest lorries roaring daily in both directions on this narrow C-class residential street.

"Pedestrians, cyclists and other road users travel in fear of their lives and children do not cycle at all."

Mr Swain said 80 per cent of those who returned survey forms were in favour of traffic calming, including humps and chicanes.

A report to the meeting admits there is a problem in Ford Road.
