Plans have been unveiled to build a specialist music and maths block at Downlands School in Hassocks.
West Sussex County Council wants to build a three-storey maths centre and music suite, including three practice rooms, at the school in Dale Avenue.
Pupils are currently taught the subjects in cramped rooms or portable buildings.
Council spokeswoman Jane Robinson said: "At the moment there are seven general teaching rooms that are not of a very high standard."
The scheme is due to start in April and be completed by October.
But first the planners at Mid Sussex and West Sussex councils must approve it.
Mid Sussex's south area plans sub-committee has recommended the project be approved but says disruption to traffic in Dale Avenue must be minimised.
It echoed the fears of Hassocks Parish Council that if contractors' and other firms' vehicles were left in Dale Avenue it would cause major disruption at peak times.
