A man who devoted his life's work to caring for the disabled has died at the age of 80.

Ronald Ablett was a stalwart of Hove Society for the Disabled for almost 40 years.

In 1987, Hove Borough Council made him a freeman of the borough to recognise his long and hard work.

Mr Ablett, of Welbeck Court, Kingsway, accepted the honour only on the understanding that it was on behalf of all the society's voluntary workers.

He founded the society and was its secretary for many years. He continued to be active on its behalf until only a year ago.

One of his pioneering moves more than 20 years ago was to come up with plans for a specially-designed taxi for disabled people.

May Longhurst, chairman of the society, said: "He was a wonderful man. He gave his life to the society."

There will be a private family funeral on Friday but a memorial service may be arranged later.

Mr Ablett leaves a widow, Irene, two sons, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
