I was appalled to read the suggested names for the St James's Street area (November 28).

First of all, St James's Street is not in Kemp Town, which is further east. It is also ridiculous to use the term "village" for an urban location. As for "Kemp Town Village", it can't be both town and village.

The rising ground to the east of the Old Steine had for centuries been called the East Cliff.

This name was changed to King's Cliff in 1908 in honour of King Edward VII.

The names of the laines (large fields divided into strips) in this area are, to the south of what is now St James's Street, "Little Laine" and, to the north, "Hilly Laine". The Kemp Town Estate was laid out in 1823 on the East Laine.

It seems to me to be inappropriate to market St James's Street and Kemp Town together as their characteristics are quite distinct.
