Councillors are teeing up for a row with residents over plans for a new golf course.

Adur Council will be asked to approve a planning brief for the 18-hole course and sports pitches near Shoreham airport tonight.

People living near the site at New Monks Farm, Lancing, fear it will lead to their gardens or homes flooding after heavy rain.

They also believe extra traffic going to and from the site will make narrow and congested roads in the Mash Barn area even more dangerous.

The golf course would be built on low-lying land on the River Adur flood plain which is criss-crossed by drainage ditches.

Soil and other materials would be brought in to raise the level of the course by between 1.5m and 4.5m and residents fear this will result in water running off the site, causing flooding.

Mr Roland Chad, of Mash Barn Lane, told the council: "Many residents living in the eastern side of Barfield Park have flooded rear gardens.

"This flooding would appear to originate from the site, which is not supposed to be liable to flooding.

"Despite assurances given at a recent public meeting, there are still concerns about the possibility of flooding once construction is finished, particularly in view of the recent weather.

"Some residents feel that the whole project should be abandoned."

Brighton developer Wheelwright Estates has submitted two applications for the golf course and the sports facilities.

The council needs to draw up a development brief for the golf course to be included in its local plan and has asked the developer for more details.
