Brighton and Hove Council chief executive Glynn Jones has shown his commitment to a new action team tackling the twin evils of drugs and alcohol abuse.
Despite running a council with a budget of more than £250 million which is also the largest employer in town, he will make time to chair the team.
That's because the problem is huge. Addiction to hard drugs is rife in Brighton and Hove while the evidence of alcohol abuse is clear for everyone to see in the town centre.
Mr Jones is bringing together people from all the main agencies to do everything from cutting the potential for crime to getting earlier treatment for addicts.
He's right to give this such high priority. If drug and alcohol abuse is allowed to spiral out of control, it will cause a lot of misery, not just for the addicts, but also for many who cross their paths.
